The suits were designed so that during the mission, the astronauts would be able to remove their spacesuits and stow them away in a bag--ready to be worn again during their time on the moon or outside the spacecraft. This suit weighs about 56 pounds (25 kg), and when combined with the portable life support system (PLSS) and additional equipment, weighs a total of 189 pounds (86 kg) here on Earth. "This suit, which was used to walk on the moon, is one of three custom-fitted suits that were provided to each Apollo astronaut. One suit was for flight, one for training, and one was provided as a back-up."
